Let’s examine the final fact checked claim made by Dr. Janci Lindsay in April 2021.

According to a Health Feedback fact check article, Dr. Janci Chunn Lindsay, PhD., an American scientist and toxicologist claimed that “COVID-19 vaccines will cause blood clotting, fertility problems, and immune escape”, in remarks shared at a 23 April 2021 meeting of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Claim 3: “There is strong evidence for immune escape, and that inoculation under pandemic pressure with these leaky vaccines is driving the creation of more lethal mutants”

Angéline Rouers, an immunologist and research fellow at the Infectious Diseases Labs of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore, told Health Feedback that this claim isn’t grounded in scientific evidence. She explained that “the rapid vaccination of as many people as possible is crucial to stop the variants. The virus mutates, not because of vaccination but because it is a virus, and every virus in the world can mutate¹.”

WHAT THE DATA SHOWS

Antigenic escape, immune escape, immune evasion or escape mutation occurs when the immune system of a host is unable to respond to an infectious agent: the host's immune system is no longer able to recognize and eliminate a pathogen, such as a virus. Antigenic escape is not only crucial for the host's natural immune response, but also for the resistance against vaccinations.

Vaccine escape is the term used to describe the process of a virus mutating to form a variant that evades the immune response induced by vaccination. Because the genetic vaccines do not provide sterilizing immunity, those who are vaccinated and exposed to the virus can still become infected. The incomplete immunity puts pressure on the virus and selects for virus particles which have the advantage to still attach to a cell and initiate the replication cycle. The sub-optimal immunity induced from COVID-19 genetic vaccination is driving the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants. This is akin to Darwin’s theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest.
